ANNA is the Association of National Numbering Agencies, comprising 78 National Numbering Agencies (NNAs), who are responsible for the allocation of ISINs (International Securities Identification Number according to ISO 6166) and CFIs (Classification of Financial Instruments according to ISO 10962). Being part of ANNA gives the NNA the opportunity of participating in a worldwide Association whose recommendations and decisions can have a direct impact on NNA local markets. Moreover, the NNA’s local market and market participants will gain more visibility and have easier and faster access to the exchange of ISINs on a global basis. ANNA was formed under Belgian law in 1992 to promote the use of international securities identification numbers ("ISINs") as the adopted method of uniquely identifying financial instruments. The Association originally started with 22 National Numbering Agencies who worked on the concept of standardizing the associated algorithms that form the basis of the ISIN.
ANNA was subsequently appointed by the International Organization for Standardization ("ISO") as the Registration Authority and Maintenance agency for the ISIN standard (ISO 6166). More than fifteen years later, the use of ISINs is common place in both the pre- and post-trade environments. ANNA has also been approved by ISO as the Maintenance Agency and Registration Authority for the CFI Standard (ISO 10962) in 1995.
